The best value per rootlet we sell.

These are 2-year-old American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) rootlets from our family farm in Marathon County, Wisconsin. Hand-graded, dormant, and ready to plant. Once they're in your soil, you're 4 to 5 years from harvest.

Sold in packs of 20 or more, starting at $39.99 for a 20-pack ($2 per rootlet). The lowest per-rootlet price in our lineup.

Why 2-year over 3-year or 5-year

Volume and patience. Younger rootlets cost the least per plant because we've done less of the growing for you. If you're scaling a serious plot, expanding an existing patch, or you don't mind waiting an extra year or two for harvest, the math works hard in your favor.

A 20-pack of 2-year rootlets costs about the same as 8 of our 3-year rootlets. Twenty plants versus eight, same money. You're trading time for inventory.

This is the right pick if you own woods you want to fill with ginseng over the next 5 to 6 years. It's the wrong pick if you only want to test a small patch with a 3-pack or get to harvest faster, which is what 5-year rootlets are for.

Where do these come from

George and Adam grow these rootlets on our family farm in Wisconsin. Our family has been growing ginseng for over 40 years. We brought our own products to market in 2018 because we got tired of watching brokers price our roots without ever seeing them.

Marathon County, Wisconsin is the ginseng capital of North America. The cold winters, glacial loam, and shaded hardwood canopy produce higher ginsenoside content than anywhere else on Earth. Asian buyers pay a premium for Wisconsin-grown American ginseng specifically. Your rootlets start their life in that soil.

Shipping

In stock right now. Ships within 2 business days in insulated packaging that keeps the rootlets cool and hydrated. Free shipping on orders over $75, which every 20-pack qualifies for easily. Standard delivery arrives in 3 to 5 business days within the U.S.

We don't ship internationally. Live plant material faces import restrictions in most countries.

How to plant your rootlets

  1. Pick a shaded spot. Ginseng wants 70 to 80 percent shade. Hardwood forests, north-facing slopes, or shade cloth all work.
  2. Test your soil. Target pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Loose, well-drained, slightly acidic, rich in organic matter.
  3. Plant 1 to 2 inches deep, bud end up, roots facing down.
  4. Space 6 to 12 inches apart. Crowding leads to disease.
  5. Mulch lightly with leaf litter. Water if your soil is dry. Then leave them alone.

A 20-pack fills about 30 to 60 square feet of a well-spaced ginseng bed, depending on how tightly you space the plants. Plan your plot before you order. Your plants will start producing berries in their fourth growing year, roughly 2 years after planting a 2-year rootlet. Those berries are the source of next season's Wisconsin ginseng seeds. Harvest the roots in years 6 to 8 from planting.

Ideal Climate

Ideal Climate

Wisconsin's rich soil and cool summer climate make it an ideal growing region to produce ginseng of unsurpassed quality. Ginseng needs a site that has moist, deep, well-drained soil and is not overly brushy allowing for forests of 75 percent shade. Dairyland's Wisconsin farm allows for this kind of growing environment.

The Process

Gathering Seeds

Gathering Seeds

Once the ginseng garden reaches 4 years old the ginseng will start to develop berries. In late summer the seeds will be picked by a picking crew and sent to get the pulp removed

De-pulping the Seeds

De-pulping the Seeds

The red pulp from the berries is removed and the seeds will be washed clean and rinsed thoroughly preparing them for storage.

Climate Controlled Storage

Climate Controlled Storage

All Seeds are then stored in a climate controlled environment for 10 months. This process is also known as the stratification process and helps increase the germination percentage.
