Wisconsin Ginseng Rootlets: 2-Year, 3-Year, and 5-Year Options

We grow three ages of American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) rootlets on our family farm in Marathon County, Wisconsin. All three come from the same soil, the same growers, and the same hand-grading process. The only difference is how long we've been growing them before they reach your garden.

Pick the age that matches your timeline and budget. Then plant.

The three ages compared

Age Price Pack Size Harvest Wait Best For
2-Year $2 each 20+ from $39.99 4 to 5 years Large plots, scaling up
3-Year $5 each 3+ from $14.99 3 to 4 years First-time growers, balanced commitment
5-Year $5 each No minimum 1 to 3 years Testing, fast harvest, commercial use

All three SKUs ship in 2 business days. All three carry our 30-day satisfaction guarantee.

Why Wisconsin ginseng matters

Marathon County, Wisconsin, is the ginseng capital of North America. The combination of cold winters, glacial loam, and shaded hardwood canopy produces American ginseng with higher ginsenoside content than anywhere else on Earth. Ginsenosides are the active compounds buyers actually pay for: the molecules behind the energy, immune, and stress-response benefits.

Asian buyers pay a premium for Wisconsin-grown American ginseng specifically. When you plant our rootlets, you're starting your crop with the same genetic and soil heritage that built that reputation.

Who grows these

George and Adam grow these rootlets on our family farm in Wisconsin. Our family has been growing ginseng for over 40 years. We brought our own products to market in 2018 because we got tired of watching brokers price our roots without ever seeing them.

When you call our number, you're talking to people who plant rootlets every spring and harvest roots every fall. Soil questions, pest problems, shade concerns: we've probably solved them on our own land. That's not a kind of support most ginseng resellers can offer.

Shipping

All three rootlet ages are in stock right now. Orders ship within 2 business days in insulated packaging that keeps the rootlets cool and hydrated. Free shipping on orders over $75. Standard delivery arrives in 3 to 5 business days within the U.S.

We don't ship internationally. Live plant material faces import restrictions in most countries.

How to choose your age

The decision comes down to two questions: how much are you planting, and how long are you willing to wait?

  • Planting a lot? Go 2-year. Twenty rootlets for $39.99 is the cheapest way to fill a sizable plot. You're trading 1 to 2 extra years of waiting for a much lower per-plant cost.
  • Planting a moderate amount? Go 3 years. Three rootlets for $14.99 lets you test a small patch or start a medium plot without committing to 20 plants. Balances cost and harvest timeline.
  • Planting a small amount, or want to harvest soon? Go 5-year. $5 per rootlet with no minimum order. Buy 5 to test, 50 to scale, or 500 for a commercial plot. Shortest path to a harvest you can sell, brew, or replant.

You can also mix ages. Plenty of growers buy 5-year for a test bed, 3-year for the main plot, and 2-year for long-term expansion. All three ship together.

If you want to start from scratch rather than transplant, see our Wisconsin ginseng seeds.

How to plant your rootlets

  1. Pick a shaded spot. Ginseng wants 70 to 80 percent shade. Hardwood forests, north-facing slopes, or shade cloth all work.
  2. Test your soil. Target pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Loose, well-drained, slightly acidic, rich in organic matter.
  3. Plant 1 to 2 inches deep, bud end up, roots facing down.
  4. Space 6 to 12 inches apart. Crowding leads to disease.
  5. Mulch lightly with leaf litter. Water if your soil is dry. Then leave them alone.

Common questions about ginseng rootlets

When can you plant ginseng rootlets?

Fall and spring are the best windows. Fall planting (October to November, before the ground freezes) gives roots time to establish over winter. Spring planting (March to April, after thaw) also works in most hardiness zones.

How long does ginseng take to mature?

Ginseng plants typically reach harvest maturity at 6 to 8 years of total age. The age of the rootlet you start with determines how long you wait. A 2-year rootlet takes 4 to 5 more years. A 5-year rootlet takes 1 to 3.

What hardiness zones work for ginseng?

USDA zones 3 through 7. Ginseng prefers cool summers and cold winters. It struggles in zones 8 and warmer.

Do you ship in winter?

Yes. We ship year-round. Insulated packaging protects dormant rootlets from cold transit conditions.

Is ginseng cultivation profitable?

It can be, with patience. Wisconsin-grade ginseng roots sell to brokers and wholesale buyers at strong prices, particularly into Asian markets. Wild-simulated ginseng commands a premium over field-grown. The catch: harvest is 4 to 6 years out from the date you plant, so this is a long-term investment, not a quick flip.

If you're new to ginseng cultivation and not sure where to start, the 3-year is the safest pick. If you have land and patience, the 2-year wins on cost. If you want to test before scaling, the 5-year gets you to harvest faster.
